Straight from the crane factory to a job in a wind farm

Sommer Kranverleih GmbH took delivery of a new Liebherr LTM 1450 8.1 mobile crane Liebherr 450-tonne crane made a great impression at its first job at “Vier Berge” Wind Farm Quickly ready for action on site with its 85 metre telescopic boom Sommer Kranverleih GmbH based in Bremen has taken delivery of a new Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 mobile crane. For its first job the new crane was driven straight from the manufacturing plant in Ehingen to the “Vier Berge” Wind Farm in Saxony-Anhalt. Once there it installed cables for bracing concrete towers at a hook height of 100 metres. The task was completed in just two days after which the new 450-tonne crane set off to tackle its next job. Managing Director Björn Sommer explained: “Its 85 metre telescopic boom enabled us to set up the LTM 1450-8.1 quickly and easily. My people at the site were delighted and reported that they required very little equipment to carry out the work.” This allowed the LTM 1450-8.1 to display all its strength as a fast-erecting crane. With a 21 metre fixed boom attached to the telescopic boom which had been extended to a length of 79.5 metres the crane was able to complete the work using just 34 tonnes of ballast – hoisting a load of seven tonnes to a hook height of 100 metres with a radius of 24 metres. “VarioBase® enabled us to increase the lifting capacity by around 15 percent for this load case” remarked Björn Sommer. An LTM 1070-4.2 and an LTM 1500-8.1 from Sommer were also in action at the wind farm. “The oldest crane there was built in 2017. We believe in keeping our equipment up to date. The new LTM 1450-8.1 will be replacing a 400-tonne crane and will hopefully also take the strain off our LTM 1500-8.1” said Sommer. This year in addition to the LTM 1450-8.1 Sommer will also be taking delivery of an LTM 1090-4.2 LTM 1230-5.1 LTM 1160-5.2 and an LTM 1030-2.1. The LTM 1450-8.1 is capable of travelling on public roads with a 12-tonne axle load including its 85 metre telescopic boom all its outriggers and the complete hoist winch. This enables it to be prepared for use quickly once it reaches the site. For even greater flexibility and mobility Sommer purchased the LTM 1450-8.1 with a completely removable telescopic boom and a feature enabling individual telescopic sections to be detached quickly. This enables the crane’s gross weight and axle loads can be reduced for travelling on public roads for example to cross bridges with a weight limit and for driving at night. It also means that road permits are often issued more quickly.
Sarens Helps Lift Power Plant Sections In Nigeria
Sarens Buildwell Nigeria was commissioned by Chuanxing logistics to lift and position power plant equipment at the Azura Power plant in Benin city Edo state Nigeria. The joint team had to transport a reactor and heat exchange equipment from Lagos to Benin City and then lift and position it in the power plant. The ground at the execution site had a soft laterite soil so the team decided to deploy the LTM1300-1 for the lift and installation and modular trailers for the transportation of the sections. The crew lifted the sections from the trailers and position them at a radius of 9m. The heaviest section weighed 94T.

The 230 tonne crane provides massive power for working at great heights. “We only use Liebherr mobile cranes” said Yvonne Schmitz. “The new 230 tonne crane is a perfect addition to our fleet. It will replace a six-axle 250 tonne crane. One of the main factors behind the decision to buy the crane was its powerful very long 75 metre boom – and all on a five-axle chassis.” HKV Schmitz will mainly use the new crane for erecting tower cranes and for working in chemical plants. “The technical VarioBase® and VarioBallast® features on the LTM 1230-5.1 are very handy in everyday practical use” continued Ms Schmitz. Greater economy due to less ballast being transported and greater flexibility particularly on constricted sites are extremely useful for everyday use. The 230 tonne crane is the first one to feature VarioBase®Plus – a asymmetrical support base generates even higher lifting capacities at the rear of the crane. The company is based in Cologne and has a 48-strong workforce in the HKV Group with a total of 26 Liebherr cranes. The fleet’s flagship is an LR 1500 crawler crane. In addition to crane work the family-run company which was founded in 1995 also offers heavy haulage erection and project planning services.
The WOLFF 235 B – New dimensions in assembly and maintenance
Time is money. On construction sites this not only applies to the performance of a crane but also to its assembly and maintenance characteristics. The faster a crane is ready for operation the more cost effective it is. This premise was the top priority when developing the new WOLFF 235 B. In terms of performance it replaces the popular WOLFF 224 B and ranks between the hydraulic WOLFF 166 B and the next larger WOLFF 275 B in the lower load moment range thus fulfilling the demands of construction sites with a high volume of concreting work on high-rise buildings. “The WOLFF 235 B was developed in close collaboration with WOLFFKRAN customers from the UK who have decades of experience in handling luffing cranes on inner-city construction sites. The result is a WOLFF with a proven duty chart that is unrivalled when it comes to assembly and versatility” says Wouter van Loon Product Manager at WOLFFKRAN. Its assembly characteristics are its true strength Although WOLFF cranes are generally easy to assemble the manufacturer has raised the bar to yet another level with its latest model. As a result the hoisting gear of the new WOLFF 235 B is positioned on the jib rather than the counter jib as is typical. “This makes it possible to reeve the hoisting rope on the ground and thus completely pre-assemble the entire jib” explains Wouter van Loon and adds: “As well as being very convenient and safe it is also a novelty for luffing jib cranes of this size.” The luffing gear can be mounted either on the counter jib or on the tower top during the assembly process which offers more flexibility with regard to the size of the mobile crane. The second option has the advantage that the entire tower top including the hoisting gear with pre-reeved pulley block can be transported and lifted onto the crane as a single unit which is an enormous time saver. “In addition the cabin platform with the WOLFF Cab and switch cabinet can be placed on the empty counter jib during transportation” says van Loon. Further overall low component weights ensure that a WOLFF 235 B can assemble another of its kind at a jib radius of 40 meters – a very popular process on multi-crane city sites where space is often an issue and also saving on time and money for a mobile crane. Maintenance set go! Another key aspect in the development of the WOLFF 235 B was the economical maintenance of the crane which led to the decision to use an identical winch for both the hoisting and the luffing gear. WOLFFKRAN opted for the tried and tested 60 kW winch Hw 1160 FU that is used in numerous other WOLFF crane models which is also the case for the slewing gear and the frequency converters that are used in the 235 B. Aside from integrating proven technology this stands for economical warehousing as fewer different spare parts have to be stocked and also simplifies training of service technicians. The same principle applies to the 8-tonne counterweight blocks that are used in all next larger WOLFF luffing jibs cranes. “It is also worth mentioning that the new WOLFF manages with only four counterweight blocks which means that only four lifts are required for the complete ballasting of the crane” explains van Loon. Further features facilitating maintenance include the use of maintenance-free multi-disk brakes and the positioning of the luffing gear at the bottom of the tower top. The latter allows particularly convenient and safe access to the luffing gear from the counter jib. The slewing gear can be serviced from an auxiliary platform. At home in the city The WOLFF 235 B offers a maximum load capacity of 8 tonnes in single-fall and 16 tonnes in 2-fall operation and jib lengths from 30 to 60 meters. Designed to deliver its best performance with a 50 meter jib it outperforms its competition with a tip load capacity of 4.1 tonnes. Its efficient 60 kW hoisting winch allows for working speeds of up to 130 mmin and a rope storage capacity of 620 meters. That all makes it the ideal crane for high-rise construction with reinforced concrete. It comes with a connection to the 2-meter tower UVTV 20 and can reach a maximum freestanding height of 82 meters using standard components from the modular WOLFF tower system. Thanks to its active absorber the WOLFF 235 B achieves a smaller minimum jib working radius of 10 percent of the jib length. The steeper jib position means that the load can be picked up closer to the tower which is a particular advantage at cramped city construction sites as trucks can be unloaded closer to the crane and loads do not have to be lifted over adjacent roads. Top class crane control as standard For the WOLFF 235 B the proven WOLFF crane control has been enhanced with a brake testing function allowing the main and secondary brakes to be tested independently of each other. Further included as standard is the WOLFF Link remote diagnostic and maintenance tool with real-time display of the crane operator’s monitor fine drive modes and automatic power optimization for the hoisting and luffing gear an anti-collision interface as well as the WOLFF Boost function increasing load capacity by 10 percent.
