For almost 50 years, SDLG has been a high-value brand in its local markets. Now, its reliable and robust construction equipment is attracting customers in emerging and mature markets alike, paving the way for further market presence and in the area of innovative solutions. Our mantra is: Reliability in Action.

Founded in 1972, SDLG (Shandong Lingong Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.) quickly became a well-regarded brand in the Chinese construction market. Its customers praised the reliability and value-for-money of its machines, as well as being a trusted partner to Chinese contractors.

Strategically located directly between Beijing and Shanghai, SDLG’s Linyi manufacturing plant is a sight to behold. The plant spans 127,000m2 (equal to 158 football fields) and features intelligent, automated assembly lines, overseen by a team of skilled technicians who meticulously inspect every component of SDLG’s signature, reliable machines. The plant is also ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and OHSAS 18001 (health and safety) certified, and is partly powered by solar energy.

Recent innovations include electric and remote-controlled prototypes. The plant also houses design offices, component and prototype assembly workshops, areas for equipment performance tests and outdoor test tracks.

Thanks to its emphasis on quality, SDLG has picked up many prestigious accolades over the years, including the China Quality award and the Asian Excellent Quality award.

Member of the Volvo Group

By 2007, SDLG had become a member of the Volvo Group and begun a concentrated export campaign. Today, around 40,000 wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, motor graders, compactors and excavators leave the plant every year. These machines are shipped to 80 markets around the world, where they have become a popular choice among small businesses, as well as the public sector.

“SDLG is quickly earning acceptance in broad customer groups,” says Jonas Gardetun, VP for Middle East and Africa at Volvo CE. “SDLG is currently a leading manufacturer of wheel loaders in the world; with these we have earned a leading market share across the Middle East and Africa, especially in the segment of the five-tonne loaders and below. Market share is also increasing for other product lines, such as graders, backhoe loaders and compactors. We have a clear objective to grow our market presence even further.”

Manufacturing the future

The rise in interest from premium customers stems not only from SDLG’s reliable quality and robust dealer network, but also from its increased focus on research and development (R&D) into new technologies. Much of SDLG’s R&D takes place in the neighbouring city of Jinan, where engineers at the Volvo Tech Centre – which combines Volvo and SDLG research and development – work to develop new technology, products and components for customers in emerging markets and mature markets alike.

Providing a glimpse into the future of machine equipment at SDLG, the Experience Center, on site at Linyi, showcases the best of its latest advancements. It also features an operation status room that can track over 70,000 connected machines in real time. The application systems were established by SDLG in cooperation with tech companies and Chinese universities, and are helping to optimise service intervals and provide smoother, productive operations for customers.

However, at its heart, SDLG’s core focus will always be to provide high-value, affordable and reliable machines for both smaller contractors and the public sector, affirming its mantra: ‘Reliability in Action’.
