Volvo Buses To Supply 38 Electric Buses To Cape Town

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Volvo Buses will deliver at least 38 Volvo BZR Low Entry Electric busses to the City of Cape Town, marking the launch of South Africa's first domestically bodied electric busses.

The buses will be built on Volvo's BZRLE Electric chassis, with bodywork developed and constructed locally at the Gauteng Bus and Coach Center in Johannesburg.

Cape Town will oversee the charging infrastructure, while Volvo Buses will provide the city with planning and technical knowledge as it transitions from diesel to electric operations.

The low-entry buses will be handicap accessible and can accommodate both sitting and standing passengers. Their installed battery capacity will be tailored to Cape Town's operational needs.

The first buses are set to arrive in 2027, with the purchase sponsored by South Africa's Public Transport Network Grant. The first procurement includes a minimum of 38 vehicles, with the fleet possibly expanding if more financing is available.
