DP World Awards Dar Es Salaam Port Yard Upgrade To EDECS

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - DP World has awarded EDECS Group a contract to renovate seven operating yards at Tanzania's Dar es Salaam Port Terminal 1, providing additional cargo-handling facilities as the port continues to modernize.

The project encompasses roughly 90,000 square meters of cargo and material handling spaces, including the design and construction of renovated yards, new gates, utilities, and infrastructure for digital yard management systems. EDECS is also building high-mast lighting and a port-wide fire prevention network.

Construction is currently underway at Terminal 1, which handles containers, general goods, and bulk commodities. The port recently processed 46,582 TEUs in July, its largest monthly container throughput and more than double the 13,779 TEUs handled in May 2024.

The upgrading is vital for East Africa's logistics and heavy equipment industries, since Dar es Salaam handles more than 30 million tons of cargo each year, accounting for more than 90% of Tanzania's international marine commerce. Improved cargo yards and handling capacity will facilitate the flow of construction machinery, mining equipment, vehicles, and other project goods into Tanzania and inland.

Dar es Salaam also serves landlocked markets in East and Central Africa, thus continuous port investment is critical for equipment movements supporting regional mining, construction, and infrastructure projects.
