Kubota Corporation (Head Office: Naniwa-ku, Osaka; President and Representative Director: Yuichi Kitao; hereinafter, "Kubota") announced today the development of "D902 Electronically-Controlled Engine (Displacement: 0.898L)," Kubota's first electronically-controlled diesel engine below 19 kW.

This new D902 will bolster Kubota's diesel engine line as it corresponds to various regional emission standards, including EPA*2 Tier 4 (North America), Stage V (Europe), and China IV standards (to be implemented in December 2022), and its compact size facilitates switching from current Kubota engines.

1.Background and Objectives

  • Kubota meets the diverse needs of construction/industrial machinery manufacturers from around the world for engines, including those that comply with the latest emission standards in different countries/regions, thus maintaining the leading position in the global market of industrial diesel engines up to the 100hp*3.
  • The latest offering from Kubota, D902 electronically-controlled engine, saves users of our current engines from the need to develop new machinery to accommodate changes in dimensions and/or structures of said engines and is capable of complying with the latest emission standards (output of below 19 kW) around the world.
  • Equipped with a one-of-a-kind common rail system developed exclusively for small engines, electronically-controlled D902 comes with a new combustion system, TVCR. The end result is that it is compact and easy to mount, with clean emissions (the amount of black smoke are reduced to an imperceptible level) and low fuel consumption. This innovative engine corresponds to various regional emission standards, including China's national smoke regulations Category III*4, which are the toughest state-wide smoke emission standards there, in addition to EPA Tier 4 (North America), Stage V (Europe), and China IV standards (to be implemented in December 2022).

2.Features

[1] Suppress black smoke

The amount of black smoke is reduced to an imperceptible level at start, acceleration, and a rapid increase in workload, which corresponds to Category III smoke regulations in China.

[2] Low-fuel consumption

This new D902 consumes about 5% less fuel than its current conventional model.

[3] Acquisition of engine operating data, improvement in drivability and work efficiency

  • Controlled electronically, this new D902 is capable of communicating via CAN*5, thus allowing engine speed and torque to be controlled using signals from vehicles.
  • Engine operating data, which are essential for telematics service, can be acquired via CAN.
  • Due to superior torque characteristics, which mechanically-controlled engines cannot match, lower rotation due to a rapid increase in workload is suppressed, enhancing drivability and work efficiency.

*5.Controller Area Network. Serial communication standards released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other without a host computer.

[4] Compatibility

This new D902 uses the same external dimensions, locations of ports and an engine mount, and PTO*6 as its current model, thus facilitating easy model upgrades.
